Painting

1) the artistic design of a surface using paint
2) everything from the world of the visual, the imagination and  feelings can be made the subject of painting
(Brockhaus Encyclopedia)

The subject of painting deals with the phenomena of individual perception which leads via perception and reflection from the copy to an autonomous image. Between figuration and abstraction, the study of painting investigates formal basic elements of line, form and colour, debates surface, structure and space as a constructive element of composition and explores sound, rhythm and movement according to physical and conceptual principles. Alongside classical imaging and painting techniques, contemporary painting discusses media-based constructions as an extensive imaginary language.

In an interdisciplinary context, painting opens up basic design impulses, the influence of which becomes effective in the neighbouring disciplines of graphics, sculpture and spatial installations and additionally leads into areas of the current development of design, fashion and architecture. Painting as a synaesthetic impulse for interdisciplinary dialogue forms its own area of effectiveness in the history of modern and contemporary music.

The image of painting presents itself as an “event space” and appears as the definition of reality. The recognition as well as the discussion of playfully and consciously subjective contemporary experience form an important component of teaching in the context of the discussion of art-historical as well as art-theoretical sources. Questions on the significance and position of art in society open the discussion to the politically and historically reflective contexts of our time.
