Spatial Strategies /Interior Design

The curriculum for Interior Design in the field of “spatial structuring” deals with the themes of space and the design of spaces or interiors in the sense of an extended, dynamic definition of space. It is interface-oriented, which means that design and art courses are integrated.

The course content refers to social and public spaces, cultural, media and political spaces, to communicational and  interactional spaces, and in a more narrow sense, functional spaces, to virtual spaces, to overlaps and combinations or the influences of imaginary and real environments.

Developing concepts for such spaces and their use and implementing them professionally is the core skill the designers learn. This includes interdisciplinary artistic and scientific project development as well as individual design work with relation to different spatial phenomena.

This is carried out by developing prototypical and singular objects and installation as an alteration of or interventions into pre-defined environments. It leads to the creation of new spatial and utility concepts up to systems for spatial planning, arrangements and structuring.

Master’s Degree Study Programme at the Muthesius Academy of Fine Arts and Design

2010 extended deadline for Applications:
June 30th, 2010

Applicants for the Master’s Study Programme in Spatial Strategies can be graduates of Bachelor or Diploma programmes in the disciplines of Fine Arts, Stage Design, Architecture, Interior Design, Visual Communication, Design, or any other design-oriented study programmes.

Admission requirements are a Bachelor’s degree or Diploma or an equivalent degree with a grade point average of at least 2.5. The applicants are also required to submit documentation containing detailed descriptions at least three individually prepared projects. The candidates will be selected by the Academy Commission following the interviews.

M. A. Spatial Strategies
In the face of the increasing medialisation of the public (and private) sphere and the increasing dissolution of distinct boundaries between individual disciplines such as interior design, architecture, design, urbanism, art, and media, the Master’s Study Programme was developed to address the increasing demand for qualified university graduates within these interdisciplinary professions.

The main focus will be on (Temporary) Spatial Design, Scenography, and Spatial Intervention as an act of communication.

The main emphasis on project work which integrates both analysis and research processes will be the foundation for the study of new (transversal) forms of knowledge and expertise, in which the threshold between artistic and scientific modes of practice will be a key factor.

Contents
The Master’s Study Programme in Spatial Strategies deals with the theme of space overall, including its production, appropriation, and design in terms of an extended, process-oriented definition of space. As a key site of cultural experience (“spatial turn”), the term “space“ is understood as a space for activity in which the aspects of spatial design range from suggestion, immersion, and manipulation to critical-artistic analysis and spatial interventions.

The curriculum is interface-oriented, i.e. courses are integrated from the Muthesius Academy’s Fine Arts and Design curriculum, as well as from its external network. After the first basic semester, students can choose between two major subjects and will focus on an individual area of expertise.

The two main agendas of the MA Spatial Strategies Programme:

Spatial Scenography / Intermedial Spatial Concepts
Prof. Manfred Schulz
The increasing entanglement of modes of image production and architectonic space require that interior as well as in urban spaces address the relation between real and virtual space, in particular, virtual spaces of communication. In a scenographic approach towards design, artistic, and scientific agendas for creating spaces of communication and interaction will be developed here.

Spatial Intervention / Artistic research and interventions in (public) spaces.
Prof. Christian Teckert
The engagement with specifically spatial aspects of the public sphere will be the focus of this MA. Analysing and intervening in space is understood here as a situative practice based on a contemporary discourse regarding space and society. Public exteriors, as well as (semi-)public interiors, are approached as spaces determined by specific politics and practices, which, in turn, call for expertise in the areas of curation and mediation. This focus takes into account the increasing blurring of boundaries between spatial design, art and cultural studies, urbanism, and sociology.

Conceptions of theories of space are elaborated throughout the curriculum of the MA:

Theory of Space
Prof. Dr. Ludwig Fromm
The theory of space that will be investigated here is based on aspects of space that cannot be perceived through any one sensory function Pathic space will be a central theme, including the relationship between mathematical space and lived space. Space, whether it is lived or perceived, is dependent on the reality of both the organic and man-made space. Constructions of atmosphere effectuate sentiments which, when entangled with situations, become powerfully affective for the perceiving subject. Affects that are deliberately merged with statements can become manipulative. The emotional mediation of knowledge on the other hand is attached to the scenographical, which is accompanied by the ethical.

Programme Structure
The Master’s Study Programme in Spatial Strategies is modular
(42 semester/week credit hours/120 ECTS).

1. Orientation:
Practicing Spatial-Artistic Work
In the first semester, methodological  as well as theoretical approaches towards design will be developed.

2. Advanced Studies:
Scenographic Theory and Conception
The second semester will focus on scenographic aspects and the discussion of theories  of space.

3. Specialisation:
Intermedial Spatial Concepts/Intervention in Space
The third semester will be dedicated to the specification of a particular subject. The students will develop individual areas of expertise in accordance with their interests and abilities and explore them further within their research work.

4. Thesis
The study programme will culminate in a Master’s thesis on a specific topic within in the individually specialised subject.
