The curious look at of one’s own viewpoint, in an
eager and critical way and at a self-created distance, allow one to scratch at
the surface of one’s own pictures.
The studies of film and time-based media are dedicated to communicating the
aesthetic and technical basics of the moving image – from celluloid to digital
film. The question as to the choice of the appropriate form, the appropriate
media and their technical usage also play an important role here as does the
question concerning one’s own position and the ability to adapt to a general
cultural and art-historical context. In addition to the basic course, central
importance is given to the independent development and realisation of the
students’ own projects. This concerns the artistic-experimental work with
moving images as well as joint project work with different fields of study and
institutions. In the Academy these are the Centre for Theory, the Forum, and
the departments for Fine Arts, Communication Design and Spatial Strategies.
Excursions to festivals and exhibitions complement the course programme.
The Academy is also striving to establish an interdisciplinary and
international exchange programme, the focus being the fields of “experimental
films” and “experimental documentary films”.
The colloquium, in which the methods and results of the work are presented and
discussed with the group, is the central location for information exchange. The
“Film Perspectives” event is intended to present and discuss a selection of
films and artistic work with moving images, sometimes with invited guest
speakers.
For those studying Film/Time-Based Media, there is a video workshop with some
of the most modern equipment available and a workshop manager at their
disposal. Teaching takes place in two media seminar rooms and in a studio which
is currently under (re)construction.
In addition to digital technology a small analogue film suite (16mm/S8) is currently
being established.
