The experience gained at academies of art and design shows that more theory courses or respectively the addition of relevant compulsory courses always places practical design and theoretical reflection side by side but leaves them unconnected.
The fundamental idea of the Centre for Theory is the concept of a “two-lane highway”: on the one hand, it concerns the systematic teaching of theoretical subjects ranging from aesthetics to the history of art and the image to media and cultural theory. On the other hand, theoretical work and reflection are necessary, which is understood from practice and from the “task” of design as well as its problems. It requires direct collaboration in the subjects and the Centre for Theory.
