The field of study of visual studies requires a new understanding of the history of art which puts it in the broader context of “cultural studies”, which gives rise to questions regarding the political, economic and cultural condition of art on the basis of the examination of society’s power relationships. It also puts it in the context of “visual studies”, which regards it as a general science of images in the sense of a cultural and political contextualisation of visual phenomena.
In this sense, the history of art is a science which finds itself in a process in progress. It seeks to reflect and teach the current tendencies of the production processes of art and design historically, politically, sociologically, and theoretically.
